What Puente Is and Why It Skips the Account Step
Most translation apps treat an account as a prerequisite. Puente doesn’t. You download the app, open it, and your first translation is seconds away. There’s no email address to verify, no password to set, no profile to complete.
This isn’t an oversight — it’s a deliberate product decision rooted in the real contexts where translation matters most. Healthcare workers need to communicate with patients immediately. Travelers land in a new country with no time to fiddle with settings. First responders can’t pause to log in. Puente is built for those moments.
Step 1: Download from the App Store
Puente is available on iPhone. Search “Puente translate” in the App Store or go directly to Puente on the App Store. The app is free to download.
Once installed, open it. You’ll see the main translation interface immediately — no onboarding screens asking for permissions you haven’t needed yet, no tutorial gate you have to click through.
Step 2: Understand the Free Tier
Before your first translation, it’s worth understanding what you get for free and what’s behind a paywall.
The free tier gives you 5 translations per day. Each “translation” is one complete speech segment — you speak a sentence or two, Puente translates it, that’s one. Five is enough for a short interaction: ordering food, asking for directions, checking in at a hotel.
If you need more, two upgrade paths exist:
- Day Pass: $1.99 for 24 hours of unlimited translations. Good for a travel day, a medical appointment, or a one-time meeting.

Step 3: Choose Auto-Detect Mode
Puente offers six conversation modes — see the conversation modes reference for a full breakdown. For your first translation, use Auto-detect.
Auto-detect listens to whoever is speaking and identifies the language automatically. You don’t have to tap a button to switch who’s “active.” You and the other person simply speak naturally, and Puente handles the routing.
To activate it: tap the mode selector at the top of the main screen and choose Auto-detect. The interface is minimal — two language slots and a microphone button.
Step 4: Set Your Two Languages
Even in Auto-detect mode, you tell Puente which two languages are in play. Tap the top language slot and scroll to your language. Tap the bottom slot and select the other person’s language.
With 109 languages available, the search field is the fastest way to find what you need. Type the first few letters — “Swahili,” “Tagalog,” “Punjabi” — and it appears immediately.
Step 5: Your First Translation
Tap the microphone button and speak clearly. Normal conversational volume works fine — Puente doesn’t require you to speak slowly or unnaturally.
When you stop speaking, Puente processes the audio and plays the translation aloud in the other person’s language within a second or two. The translated text also appears on screen, so both parties can read along if needed.
Hand the phone to the other person (or just hold it between you). They speak, and Puente translates back into your language.
That’s the core loop. Most people complete their first successful translation within 90 seconds of opening the app.
Understanding What You’re Hearing
Puente uses the DeepL Voice engine, which earned a 96.4/100 quality score in Slator’s independent translation benchmarking — the highest in the industry, compared to 87–89 for Google and Microsoft. The difference shows up in longer sentences, technical vocabulary, and any phrasing where word-for-word translation would be misleading.
The translation output sounds natural because Puente also applies Auto Voice Matching, which analyzes the speaker’s pitch, rhythm, and energy and carries those qualities into the translated voice. The output doesn’t sound robotic. It sounds like a version of you speaking another language.
What Happens When You Hit the Daily Limit
After 5 free translations, the app surfaces the upgrade options clearly. You can choose the Day Pass or Pro unlock — neither requires creating an account. The purchase goes through Apple’s in-app payment system, and the limit resets either at midnight (free tier) or when your Day Pass expires.
